  1. 1901-1985. French artist. He originated l'art
  2. brut, `raw or brutal art', in the 1940s. He
  3. used a variety of materials in his paintings
  4. and sculptures - plaster, steel wool, straw,
  5. and so on .- and was inspired by graffiti and
  6. children's drawings. L'art brut emerged in
  7. 1945 with an exhibition of Dubuffet's own
  8. work and of paintings by psychiatric patients
  9. and naive or untrained artists. His own
  10. paintings and sculptural works have a similar
  11. quality, primitive and expressive.
